What are segregated funds?

Individual segregated fund contracts are issued by life insurers and invest in professionally managed portfolios. Their value changes with the underlying investments. Contracts include maturity and death benefit guarantees subject to their terms.

Understand when guarantees apply

A guarantee applies at the specified maturity date or death, rather than to every withdrawal. Guarantee levels, dates and conditions vary by contract; investment returns are not guaranteed.

Weigh the features against the cost

Fees are generally higher than comparable mutual funds because of the insurance features. Early withdrawals can result in losses and affect guarantees. We review costs, access to funds and investment risk before discussing a recommendation.

Start with your goals

Tell us what this money is for and when you may need it. We will discuss your comfort with market changes, family priorities and other savings so that the conversation begins with your needs.

Segregated funds fluctuate in value and are not suitable for every investor. Guarantees are subject to the insurance contract. Review the information folder and Fund Facts before investing.

Your questions, answered

Can segregated funds lose value?

Yes. Market values fluctuate and losses are possible. Contract guarantees apply only under the stated conditions.

Can I take money out?

Withdrawals are subject to the contract. Taking money out can reduce guarantees and may trigger charges or tax consequences.

What should I read before investing?

Review the insurer’s information folder, contract and Fund Facts, including risks, fees and guarantee conditions.
